Work Permit and Regulation Changes

Having a work permit is an obligation for every foreigner who wants to work in Indonesia. Previously known as IMTA, the permit is now changed into a notification. The Ministry of Manpower in the country already declared some changes in regulations related to working permit, in which offer more convenience for foreign workers. In case you need to make one, you better understand the new regulations. Below are latest changes that you should know.

Every foreigner worker needs one Indonesian coworker. This is the new regulation to make sure the foreign employee can work effectively. The Indonesia coworker must be at the same position to the foreigner. There is an exception for certain positions that do not require any coworker including director, foundation supervisor, foundation member of management, foundation founder and commissioner. It is also valid to foreign worker who works temporarily or foreign artist.

The second changes related to work permit regulation is the obligation for the employers to provide Indonesian language course. If you are a foreign employee who knows nothing about Indonesian language, you must take a short course provided by the employer. However, it is not yet clear related to the language testing after course. In addition to regulation changes, all foreign workers who work for more than 6 months in Indonesia must join Indonesia’s Insurance System or also known as BPJS. Even if you already have health insurance from your country, joining BPJS is an obligation.

Before, Ministry of Manpower requires any foreigner who attends training and meeting to have temporary work permit Indonesia. Now, the regulation changes and all activities related to meetings giving speeches, job assignment, or training does not require the permit although the activities are now under business visa. Make sure you understand the changes, so you can precede the permit without any problem.
